THE AREA:
The name Camaiore originates from the Latin Campus maior = Campo maggiore, later transformed into Campomaiore and then into the current Camaiore. In the Middle Ages the city grew considerably, thanks to the ancient Via Francigena, which from Lucca headed northwest, towards the Cisa Pass, and passed through Campo Maggiore, where the monastery of San Pietro, today called the abbey of San Pietro di Camaiore, was founded in 761. In Sigeric’s itinerary, the city represented the XXVII stage, and was called Campmaior by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The first mention of the village of Campmaior dates back to the year 984.
