Castelfranco di Sotto is a municipality in the Province of Pisa, Tuscany, located about 40 km west of Florence and about 30 km east of Pisa. The hamlet has ancient medieval origins, and can be found in documents dating back to the 1215. In those years all over the Valdarno, land border dispute between Florence and Pisa and Lucca, always contrasts between Guelfi and Ghibellines, who sow violence and destruction everywhere. Tired of these bloody battles, the population of nearby villages built a house of a quadrangular shape with four doors facing the ancient “nuclei” in the direction of the four cardinal points. The castle was named Castello di Franco and from there Castelfranco.
