Buti, is a small hamlet set on the eastern slopes of the Monti Pisani. It was probably already inhabited during the roman Times however Buti was razed to the ground and built again several times over the centuries during wars among Pisa, Lucca and Florence.
The earliest mention of Buti, especially its several ‘castles’ (Castello di Panicale, Castello di Farneta, Castello di S. Stefano in Cintoia, Castel di Nocco, Castel Tonini, Castel S. Giorgio and Castel S. Agata), goes back the year 1000. Some of them are now in ruins but Castel Tonini is still in good conditions and it still protectes the very centre of the small town.
